Apparently there are more terrible ways of OS/2 thrashing the filesystem. fst will save you some of those troubles by saving some vital information about the filesystem and The DASD driver on the maintenance disk did the same endless reading. <ctrl-alt-del> I decided to try the installation command prompt.

MS Powerstation 4.0 / disk thrashing problem
Brian Mitchell <br...@aboveaverageconsulting.com> wrote in message news:38a42c2e$0$92626@news.voyager.net... I've just installed Caldera V2.3 and opening any application tends to lead to endless disk reads so that the system slows almost to a halt. I suspect that it's a caching problem. Any suggestions?

Hard Disk Thrashing
When I rebooted Linux and ran X some actions (eg getting a man page) seemed to cause endless disk thrashing. Performance seemed generally worse, and the setup scripts no longer worked. I traced that problem as far as the dialog program, which was failing to put anything on the display. This same behaviour happened

2.4.10 much better than previous 2.4.x :-)
... but I have to say that it was at least interesting enough to overcome the frustrations of the seemingly endless save/die/reload cycle. and I could never get it to come back...it just seemed to reappear after switching to a new segment of the game (read: after the disk- thrashing loading of a new scene).

Help! Performance of PP7+ shot to hell
We want to be able to turn it off at a moment's notice, or not have to worry about power outages buggering up the disk files. might not want to spend money on that (only a simple example, btw, I'm sure there is an endless list of other possible situations where more RAM isn't necessarily the best solution).

Merlin: My First Impressions
... there is endless disk activity, and it takes up too much space, better than 200MB... snip My Warp 3.0 installation was at an eye-pleasing 40-45 MB. That's why you now notice endless disk activity. Your Warp 3.0 install was almost the bare minimum. You'll learn to love the thrashing disk activity soon though :-)

Honeypot: Hopelessly trashed machine
Had the same endless thrash experience just trying to create a one-page web...so this isn't just about Jerome's impatience. 2) Tried to create the new web in FP98. It would not let me create one with that path. It's "Cannot create web" message was a lot more useful than FP2000's thrashing.

I think that there's an option to scan your disk when idle. I also think that it's on by default. -chris -- Chris J. Breisch, MCSD Michael Beck I'm sure there's probably a rational explanation for this, but I'm afraid at the rate it's thrashing my hard drives day and night they're not going to last very long.

What can Winblows95 do that linux Can't?
If the problem is modeled correctly (for example), the writing of large files onto disk won't fill the buffer cache (and potentially steal memory from processes). The difference is that FreeBSD works more robustly, handling peak load conditions without endless thrashing (when compared with Win2000.

Dynamic Disk Caching
I'm sure there's probably a rational explanation for this, but I'm afraid at the rate it's thrashing my hard drives day and night they're not going ->to last very long. BTW, I am running the latest version of McAfee VirusScan, so I'm fairly sure it's not a virus. ->Anyone know what this could be or how I could

Hard Disk Thrashing
... display, McAfee screen scan and make sure the 'enable scanning in screen-saver mode' is not checked. Other than that, no ideas. Hope a techie answers ! Thanks, but I have always made sure I don't even let it install that option since they invented it. I think ScreenScan is a harddisk thrashing resource hog.

UMSDOS + DOS defrag -> strange problems
It was suggested to me that I should create a static swap file in the amount of 1 gigabyte (double my physical RAM) and it should save my system from "endless hard disk thrashing and gnashing". Is this true? Will it make my system run slower? Would love to hear back from folks who know about this stuff...

Then there's the endless focus stealing apps are prone to do, moronic error messages, disk thrashing, memory leaks, weird or awkward interface decisions, inconsistent behavior, general bloatyness, apps locking up or becoming unresponsive, and sluggish performance unless you're the type to replace your hardware

Performance: Newbe going crazy! How do I optimize Warp...Help!
No more endless disk thrashing when I exit a large program or game as it tries to clean up a fragmented swap file. In addition, the space is permantly allocated. You won't have to worry about installing some new software to your C: drive only to find out your swap file can no longer expand.

Endless disk access - rogue app? Help!
On initial boot-up, thrashing was not an issue. However, after a little use of such things such as IE6 and/or Office Word 2000, disk thrashing became impossible. The HD light would remain on and the system became almost useless. Windows Task Manager indicated almost an endless movement of memory from RAM to Swap

95% of what made the film so effective was Hooper's storytelling ashtetics - the endless, relentlessly tight close-ups of eyes, teeth, fingers cut SO intensly Have another look at the first film - Hooper would have covered the scene with close-ups of the thrashing white of her eyes, her fingers twisting against

Since NTFS uses a b-tree the search will be faster than FAT. NTFS is also secure but is this necessary for a single user workstation. I recently blew off NTFS having grown tired of its endless thrashing - fragmented or not. FAT is much faster for my money. Sure I waste some disk space with its 16k clusters,

Interesting editor comparison
... have you noticed that in Suse 10.1, the disk performance is a lot better and the incessant disk thrashing stops once you remove mono, beagle and zen? Those who remain with Microsoft will be involved in endless time and expense upgrading, fixing, installing patches and enjoying LESS security than their Linux

Have/want list , nice cards incl Duals and top t2
The installation was quick, so I was hopeful - but I just get kde up and then so much endless disc thrashing that it is completely impossible to do anything - even worse than before. :( I suspect the kernel is vastly underestimating the amount of RAM you have. It tells you that on bootup; you can override it with a
