However, now instead of disk thrashing, something infinitely more irritating happens. The mouse cursor freezes for seconds at a time, as many as 10 seconds. You can't do anything. I've had GUI applications (Evolution is the most recent) trash my x config file when it found itself in an endless segfaulting loop.

By the time the new amiga rises (If ever ) Ram will be so cheap that perhaps we won`t need to dump endless memory pages to disk I hope people realise the difference between having protected The argument was that embedded applications definitely do not want to be swapping to disk, or thrashing a hard drive.

That would account for the hard drive thrashing. You might check your system to see how much physical memory is in use, and how much virtual memory is in use. Often when I work on vfp8, the hard disk does an endless seek. Well, actually I don't know whether it is a seek operation, but the hard disk just keep on

I think sometimes this thrashing around is the program trying to find enough contiguous space - the space is there, but it's scattered all over your hard disk, and the Mac just can't get it together! I've had similar experiences when I've been rendering in a 3D program - just endless chugging noises and nothing

An honest opinion of Windows
I was really surprised at how much difference getting rid of the endless disk swapping and thrashing made. This is particularly evident in Netscape, which is now practically silent thanks to a huge memory chache. Since ram prices are really low right now (I paid $236 for 16 megs, and current prices are comparable,)
